catKin

catKin is the Word mode of Kinopy. You link tiles into pairs, and the two fragments of each pair make one word. Each mode has its own daily, and a new one grows at midnight in your own time zone.

The rule

The two fragments of a pair make one word. The fragment nearer the soil line comes first.

The soil line is where the seed sits. Each puzzle has two boards that share one seed. The Rootlet grows down from the soil line, and the Sapling grows up from it.

Order matters. On the Rootlet, the first fragment of a pair sits at the top. On the Sapling, the first fragment sits at the bottom.

The Sapling rule

The Sapling uses the same rule as the Rootlet. The seed stays in place, you get one guess fewer, and a pair reads from bottom to top.

The Sapling unlocks when the Rootlet ends. That happens after a win or a loss, so a loss never keeps you from the Sapling.

A worked example

Follow one pair from start to finish.

Three tips

The name

A catkin is a soft tassel of tiny flowers. It hangs from the twigs of willow, birch and hazel trees in early spring.

The cat in the name also stands for concatenate, which means to put things end to end. A pair of fragments joins end to end to make one word. The capital K shows in leaf green.
